Safety verification of a cofferdam against hydraulic heave: numerical calculation based on EC7
Based on the provisions about safety against hydraulic heave failure indicated in the EC7 design code, this paper presents 2D numerical modelling of a sheet pile wall (cofferdam) embedded in homogeneous sand of isotropic permeability employing a finite-difference calculation code. The corresponding verifications are carried out on several sand types and the comparison of the numerical results with those of EC7 has allowed to conclude that the hydraulic heads (H) determined by EC7 are in excellent agreement with the numerical results except if excavation width B is equal to the flow length D. In addition, the hydraulic head (H) increases as the cofferdam excavation is widened, which will improve safety by 50% if the excavation width increases from B = D to B = 4D. The numerical results were able to reveal the limitation and the misunderstanding of EC7 code regarding the assessment of the safety against the risk of failure by hydraulic heave.
