A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Poland is one of the most centrally situated countries in Europe. Its territory is crossed by important transit lines with high volumes of traffic. Long‐distance transport is based mainly on railways whose role in the transport system is out of the ordinary. Poland is in sixth position in the world as to the amount of railway ton‐kilometres and in the fifth as regards railway passenger‐kilometres. The rapidity of development of road transport has been slowed by economic difficulties. Inland shipping is rather neglected. Sea shipping serves only international traffic. Air transport and pipelines play a secondary role. Freight transport is operated almost entirely by state‐owned enterprises. In passenger traffic the supremacy lies with public transport which comprises, besides railways, a well‐developed inter‐urban bus system and many local city systems.
