Urban Planning and Vegetation Conservation: A Case for Forward Planning?
The current trend towards residential consolidation in Australian cities is likely to make urban environmental conflicts more common and the need for environmental conservation measures more pressing. Using a detailed case-study from Melbourne, this article outlines the need for and problems associated with urban environmental planning. The role and adequacy of existing planning practices designed to preserve natural environments in urban areas is discussed. The successful protection and preservation of natural environments in urban areas is more likely to come from forward rather than statutory planning.
