Biculturalism and Community: A Transformative Model for Design Education
Students in the community design studio at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, work on projects with actual clients, with the intention of carrying these projects through to implementation. Some have had considerable social impact within New Zealand and have become known overseas. The students work collectively, producing professional reports, design guidelines, and design proposals at an urban design scale, in co-operation with local communities. In March 1988 a group of undergraduate students in the studio developed a town plan for the town of Whakatane (population 30,000) in consultation with the town's citizens. This article is about the theoretical basis and practical conclusions of this study, it offers a vehicle for developing ideas for a critical theory of design education.
