Falling Weight Deflectometer Fleet
Deflection testing with the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is an integral part of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) pavement evaluation and design process. TxDOT owns a fleet of 16 FWD consisting of different design and components. Therefore, repeatability and reproducibility are of major importance for adequate interchangeability of the fleet and was the objective of this study. To achieve the objectives of the study, three pavement sections: two flexible and one rigid were selected and six FWD's of different vintage were selected. The results of the evaluation suggest that the individual FWDs are quite repeatable. The current Strategic Highway Research Program calibration procedure seems to improve the repeatability even further. However, the reproducibility of the fleet needs improvement for effective interchangeability of the fleet.
