Lines for listening: on Gustave Lyon’s geometrical approach to acoustics
Based on Gustave Lyon’s archival material and the understanding of his practice as an acoustical consultant, this contribution aims to show how the adoption of a scientific method offered a broader insight into the cultural architectural debate of the epoch. From the ‘orthophonic’ renovation of the Palais du Trocadéro in 1909 to the realisation of a newly conceived hall—the Salle Pleyel—in 1927, Lyon became a prominent figure within the emerging field of architectural acoustics. Lyon’s geometrical approach to acoustics and the claim for an alleged scientific objectivity became central arguments within a suggestive quarrel whose principal actors were Le Corbusier and Auguste Perret, with the former promoting the value of calculated science and the latter the power of empiricism.
