Urban structure correlates of tertiary activity

This paper examines aggregate relationships between characteristics of urban structure and characteristics of trading and retail structure in the larger urban areas of England and Wales. Canonical correlation methods are used to relate four orthogonal dimensions of urban population structure to variables of turnover and numbers of establishments in each of six categories of business. Independent associations link social class indices to trading performance and retail equipment for both lower-order convenience goods and higher-order specialty goods. Characteristics of population socio-economic status are found to vary both vertically and horizontally in the hierarchy of the tertiary activity system.
