A fragment of early Stoic doctrine, called Cleanthes' syllogism, may have been part of an aesthetic argument in favor of architectural refinement in the city. The passage reads: “If a city is an inhabited construction to which people may have recourse for the dispensation of justice, then a city is surely refined. But a city is that sort of habitation. So a city is refined.”
