A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Drawing on chance: extracts from Drafting Pier 40
This paper contributes to the discussion on the role of media in design research. I see media as specific to ideas, projects, authors, and intentions. For this reason, I do not discuss them in general terms but in relation to a particular project and a specific subject, that of chance. I will reflect upon my own experience as a ‘PhD by Architectural Design’ graduate and give direct visual references of some of the media I used in my research. Twenty nine drawings make an architectural proposal, Drafting Pier 40, while eight short texts look at key artists of the twentieth century who have employed chance in their work. Theoretical concerns and investigations of practices outside architecture intersect and complement the drawing process and vice versa. Writing and drawing stimulate and critique each other, forming a two-way working procedure and permitting multiple cross-readings and viewings.
