Odorants for use with flammable refrigerants (1794-TRP)
With the increased use of flammable refrigerants, there is a need to provide a warning in case of a refrigerant leak that might lead to hazardous conditions. The addition of an odorant has been used for this purpose in other industries and could potentially be used in the HVAC&R industry if suitable odorants could be identified. As an initial step in the evaluation of the use of an odorant, a white paper study was conducted. This study identified the available odorants through a literature survey. These potential candidates were then down-selected based on similarity in boiling points with A3 and A2L refrigerants, odorant detection thresholds, odorant toxicity and odorant compatibility with materials and lubricants commonly used in HVAC&R appliances. Four odorant candidates were identified, and further development efforts were outlined.
