The Governance of City-Regions in East and Southeast Asia
What do we mean by governance, and why has it become important for students of cities? The paper begins with a definition of city-regional governance, with particular attention to the actors involved. This is followed by some examples from east and southeast Asia of both the hierarchical and spatial dimensions of city-regional governance. The paper then addresses the question of how the performance of cities might be assessed, including a discussion of criteria of good governance. In conclusion, some of the challenges for rethinking territorial governance in the region are described.
