Using questionnaire data the paper outlines structural and performance responses of a sample of Toronto's technology intensive manufacturers to the Canada US Free Trade Agreement (FTA) of 1989 and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) of 1994. Free trade has elicited complex reactions. Those firms with prior global and US export connections, including large and small firms, foreign affiliates and Canadian-owned firms, were better prepared for the new trade regime in their product and production technology. Freer trade has stimulated firms with limited exports to seek improvements in innovation and productivity, foreign affiliates have gained product mandates and increased outsourcing has been one of the production responses. Les entreprises qui jouissaient des liens d'exportation internationaux et américains antérieurs, y compris les grandes et les petites entreprises, les filiales à l'étranger, et les entreprises à capital majoritaire canadien, ont été mieux préparés à la nouvelle fac¸on de vendre leur technolgie de produit et de production. Les échanges plus libres ont incité les entreprises àfaible vocation exportatrice à développer l'innovation et à augmenter la productivité, tandis que les filiales à l'étranger ont obtenus des mandats de produit, et que le recours à la sous-traitance a été l'une des réponses de la production.
