Study on Petrophysical Properties of Unconsolidated Formations of Clay and Sand Mixtures
A triaxial cell has been designed and built which is able to measure the permeability and electric resistivity of unconsolidated, sedimentary core samples. Also, we studied the behavior of permeability, electric resistivity, and porosity with various sand/illite compositions. In this study, a laboratory-made artificial core samples were tested in order to analyze the effect of clay/sand contents of the core samples. As the ratio of clay in the core increases, permeability decreases exponentially, and electrical resistivity also decreases due to the effect of clay's conductivity. In our experiment, as the size difference between sand and clay is not so significant, the effect of sand/clay ratios to the porosity does not show large differences.
