A number of landscape projects express disaster. Among these, memorial, or commemorative, sites like the Grande Cretto in Sicily, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Jewish Museum, and the Topography of Terror, all in Berlin, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, apply different strategies in using landscape as reference, material, and formal means. Bringing these strategies into conversation with each other through the concept of the ‘expanded field’ (R. Krauss, E. K. Meyer) underlines the development of concepts referencing landscape and site as bearers of meaning across disciplines, such as sculpture, architecture, or landscape architecture.
