River Basin Management in the 21st Century: Blending Development with Economic, Ecologic, and Cultural Sustainability
Pressure on the world's rivers continues to grow. Past development along rivers has provided water supply power; navigation to nations and communities, and protected them from the ravages of floods. At the same time this development has caused loss of precious natural resources and placed many people at risk to the dangers of the floodplain. Sustainable development seeks to continue to provide the opportunities for growth without jeopardizing the rights of future generations. This article reviews recent United States and international experiences with river development. The article concludes that sustainable development is sought by water officials worldwide but that achievement of such sustainability will require a major effort on the pan of all working in the water arena
