Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning: Friends or Foes?
If you like caricatures, consider these two: one is the landscape architect as a heavenly inspired artist; the other is the regional planner as the single-minded technician. There seem to be people who believe there is some truth in both. Personally, I don't think so. In my career I met all kinds of designers and planners and none of them lived up to these caricatures. Designers turned out to be practical thinkers with an open eye for the feasible, while planners had at least a reasonable understanding of spatial quality. Still, the biases remain: for many people, planning and design are extremes that will never meet. Or, in extreme cases, the two are seen as enemies rather than allies. From my own experience, I will try to answer the question: are landscape architects and landscape planners friends or foes?
