Roads, Rates and Rubbish are Environmental Issues: The Environmental Policy Role of Local Government
The message to “Think globally, act locally” is only just beginning to be taken seriously in Australia. The Ecologically Sustainable Development Working Groups (the national environmental strategy process) recently produced reviews of the impact on Australian industry of environmental changes such as the predicted Greenhouse Effect, accumulation of toxic wastes and urban development worldwide (ESD Working Groups 1991). Environmental Protection Agencies are being established at both the State and the Federal levels, the first time the country has had the potential for comprehensive environmental monitoring. Conserving energy and transporting industrial waste, both issues for urban development, have come to occupy considerable time of Australian politicians and diplomatic and trade missions.
