Infrastrukturelle Peripherisierung: Das Beispiel Uecker-Randow (Deutschland)
This paper focuses on the infrastructural dimension of the development of peripheral rural regions in North Eastern Germany. Taking the region Uecker-Randow (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) as an example, we show that peripheral rural regions are not only confronted with economic decline and demographic change but also with a significant degradation of infrastructure supply. Limited access to technical and social infrastructures amplifies existing regional disparities and contributes to processes of “peripherization” of rural regions. “Peripherization” means a dynamic process of regional socioeconomic decline and demographic shrinking and is connected with limited options for regions and its inhabitants. The emergence of “peripherised regions” challenges the political aim of equivalent living conditions in Germany and the ideal of standardised infrastructure supply in all parts of the country. Therefore, coping with infrastructural problems will shape the future development of the Uecker-Randow region.
