User-Participation in House Design
Aprevious article (May/June 1982) described how a group of people helped to plan their homes with their architects using a full-scale simulator in the architectural department of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Switzerland. Here, the later stage is discussed, in which the houses and the occupants' experiences were assessed one year after the homes were occupied. The limitations of environmental modelling, even at full scale, were revealed; but also the whole process of user-participation in house design was seen to involve subtle, psychological aspects that are not sufficiently recognised.
