Thermal and Economic Implications of Passive Cooling Strategies in Low-Cost Housing in Tropical Upland Climates
This paper looks at the thermal and economic implications of passive cooling strategies in the tropical upland climate, with special reference to Zambia. The BRE—ADMIT thermal simulation computer model was used in the research. The findings are that the most thermally effective and cost efficient strategies are those related to the roof and the ceiling. It was also established that it is possible to cool the interior of houses in the tropical upland climate region to comfort levels, for a greater part of the day, using passive means alone although it is a rather expensive exercise if done as modifications to an existing house. These strategies are therefore best incorporated into the design from the onset.
