Foresight or Farsight?: It's the Regional Economy, Stupid
It is to the visionaries, from Olmsted to Howard to Jacobs to Castells, that planning owes its continual reinvigoration. Blakely contributes to this noble tradition by illustrating ways in which the transformation of work is rendering our local economic development planning models obsolete. But as is typical of visionaries, his vision is neither grounded in current theories of regional development nor empirically substantiated by labor market dynamics. Though clearly it is time to discard the old smokestack-chasing models of economic development, Blakely's new direction overlooks the evidence that place matters more than ever in the New Economy.
