Life-cycle seismic resilience assessment of isolated bridges equipped with different isolation systems
Damage to bridges during a seismic event can cause significant disruption to post-event activities. In addition to natural hazards, the deterioration of bridges over their lifespan also significantly impacts seismic performance. This study intends to evaluate the overall life-cycle resilience performance and post-seismic loss analysis of bridges equipped with two different isolation systems including lead rubber bearings and friction pendulum bearings. Two different bridge configurations and three different suites of earthquakes representing possible seismic hazards at the bridge site are considered. The comparative resilience assessment and cost analysis represent the base-isolation technique’s adequacy, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. Statistical analysis is conducted to identify the parameters affecting the seismic resiliency, loss and cost analysis of base-isolated bridges. The results show that seismic resilience, loss and cost analysis are more sensitive to the type of ground motions, geometric shape of the bridge and type of isolation bearings, respectively.
