Manufacturing organisation and regional employment change
McDermott P. and Keeble D. (1978). Manufacturing organisation and regional employment change, Reg. Studies 12, 247–266. This paper examines the possible impact of spatial variations in firm organisation within the U.K. upon regional employment change in different industries. It discusses regional variations in 1963 plant size by industry, before considering variations in other possible organisational indices, such as workforce composition, and within-industry structural differences. Principal components analysis is used in an attempt to identify wider dimensions of variation in the regional organisation and structure of production in each of six industries. Finally, possible relationships between the organisation of manufacturing and employment change at the regional level are considered, with particular emphasis upon the electrical engineering and clothing industries. Despite data limitations, the paper concludes that organisation deserves greater attention in regional economic analysis than it has previously received.
