A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
‘Living Green’: The Promise and Pitfalls of New Sustainable Communities
Until 2008, there was no comprehensive system to measure the sustainability of new community developments. Many new community projects, however, have won accolades for their design. This study examines 29 of these projects, in light of efforts to create indicators to measure sustainability dimensions of new developments. The study finds that the marketing websites of award-winning projects tend to focus on features that increase community attractiveness to potential buyers, but do not incorporate a full range of attributes to enhance environmental and socio-economic sustainability. This suggests the importance of more systematic rating systems and highlights the complexities of designing, building and evaluating communities.
