Spatial structure and parameter disaggregation in trip distribution models
Southworth F. (1979) Spatial structure and parameter disaggregation in trip distribution models, Reg. Studies 13, 381–394. A production-constrained entropy-maximizing trip distribution model is calibrated for a variety of trip purposes and income groups. Parameter disaggregation is extended further to incorporate origin-specific travel time—decay functions. A likelihood technique is used to quantify the relative magnitude of differences in model parameter values by each type of disaggregation. Origin-specific parameters, used in conjunction with the relative likelihood method and a technique for regrouping origin zones, allows the modeller to investigate what appear to be important effects of regional structure upon parameter values. Such an investigation is hindered by the problems of specific zoning system and sample design influences upon the parameter values obtained.
