Rehabilitation of a nineteenth-century street penetrating a medieval urban fabric: Hermes Street in Athens
Hermes Street, one of the main streets in the historical centre of Athens, was created by the architects of the city’s first plan after Independence. It was the base of a triangle constituting the city’s neo-classical extension beyond the pre-revolutionary urban fabric. At the same time, it was one of the main streets of the new city. These streets linked the modern capital to the old town, through their penetration into the latter. This article presents a proposal of rehabilitation of the street and preservation of its historical buildings. Its originality lies in its proposing a special methodology adapted to the particular character of this street and to the way its creation affected the surrounding historical built environment.
