Timber Frame Wall Materials
This article from the BRE Princes Risborough Laboratory discusses test results on materials commonly used in timber frame wall construction in the UK; they show that some have significantly lower vapour resistance values at the higher relative humidities and lower temperatures that would represent actual winter service conditions. Values normally applied in design calculations, however, are based on BS 3177, which was specifically developed for sheet materials used in packaging and is considered inappropriate for materials used in timber frame walls. Practicable alternative test conditions for this purpose are therefore suggested by the authors.
