Fair and equitable allocations of Cauvery river waters
The task of translating normative water laws and principles into an objective and operational framework for equitable apportionment of water is indeed challenging. In this study, a multi‐criterion based cooperative approach is used, which seeks to address the notion of ‘fairness’ through proportional entitlements. The paper presents an application of this approach in order to derive a ‘fair allocation’ of water for three competing co‐basin states of the Cauvery River Basin (Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu) in South Peninsular India.
