A Novel Potential Flame-retarded Bitumen
Nanoclay modified bitumen does not have only the unique advantage of reduced flammability, but also has the improvement of rheological properties. Nanoscale dispersion of nanoclay in bitumen was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Limiting oxygen index (LOi) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the flammability and thermal stability of bituminous binders. For standard and modified binders, both short term aging and long term ageing by means of Rolling thin film oven test (RTFOT) and Pressure ageing vessel (PAV) were processed, respectively. Rheological properties of bituminous binders were investigated by both empirical methods and Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The results indicate that modified binders show better rheological properties compared to standard bitumen. Thus, nanoclay is foreseen as a novel kind of potential flame retardant for bitumen.
