Estimation of Effective Permeability for a Naturally Fractured Reservoir
Powerful computing machine enables more realistic description of the reservoir and its contents. However, a typical simulation gridblock still consolidates several tens to several hundreds of geologic model cells. An appropriate upscaling algorithm is required for assigning suitable values for permeability and porosity. In order to scale up naturally fractured reservoirs, a numerical model to calculate effective permeability of complex geometry was developed and validated by comparison with an analytical model in case of the cross-beds. By applying the model to Mesaverde formation in the Piceance basin, Colorado, it was found that the estimated effective permeability tensors was matched with the direction and the magnitude of fracture patterns given in the published data. Also, the phenomena that fluids in a fractured reservoir are conveyed mostly through fractures was approved favorably by applying the numerical model.
