Do Indicators Help Create Sustainable Communities?
Sustainability is becoming an increasing concern among communities across the United States. In response, a growing number of grassroots and public sector groups are initiating efforts to simultaneously address environmental, economic, and social issues, increase community well-being, and secure the long-term health of human and natural systems. Since 1990, dozens, if not hundreds, of sustainable communities projects have been initiated in cities, counties, and regions across the country. Collectively termed the ‘sustainable communities movement’, these efforts share much in common with a number of other ‘community movements’ including healthy communities movement and quality of life movement.
