Influence of tyre inflation pressure on measured pavement strain responses and predicted distresses
The Federal Highway Administration conducted controlled loading tests on the US Route 23 Test Road under hot weather conditions in 1998. The testing was conducted using three tyre inflation pressures (TIPs) for four tyre types in two configurations on two asphalt concrete pavement sections. The pavement response data were collected from strain rosette sensors glued to the existing surface pavement layer and were adjusted to common temperature, lateral offset distance and speed for comparison purposes. The comparisons of the adjusted strain responses revealed the impact of the TIP on pavement strain responses and distress prediction. Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide fatigue cracking and rutting models were used to predict the damage influenced by TIPs to the experimental pavement sections. The most road-friendly inflation pressure is recommended for each tyre configuration based on the resulting pavement service life, with pavement thickness influencing distress predictions. The two pavement sections with different thicknesses are compared based on their predicted performance as an additional study.
