The Use of Ocean Outfalls for Effluent Disposal in Small Communities and Developing Countires
A brief comparison is mah of the environmental effects of ocean outfalls with the effects of land based treatment plants to show that outfalls can be used with advantage in many coastal areas. Typically outfalls require less capital expenditure than treatment plants and need less maintenance and less aperator attention. As such they provide a good alternative to land based treatment in many less developed countries. An example from rural Atlantic Canada is given to demonstrate the environmental and economic benefits of small outfalls.
