Strength and durability characteristics of high-strength concrete with recycled aggregate – influence of mixing techniques
Utilization of recycled aggregates (RAs) derived from construction and demolition wastes has gained interest due to scarcity of natural aggregates, shortage of landfills, and environmental issues. But, RA is restricted only to lower grade applications because of strength and durability problems. In order to overcome these difficulties, two-stage mixing approach (TSMA) is a good tool to enhance the properties of RA concrete when compared with normal mixing approach (NMA). The present study examined the influence of different mixing techniques with reference to sequence of addition of materials, on compressive strength and durability properties of high-strength concrete made with processed RA, replacing virgin coarse aggregate. The percentage replacement ranged from 0 to 100%, with increments of 10%. From the experimental results, it was concluded that the modified TSMAs enhanced the strength and durability properties of RA concrete, when compared to NMA.
