A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This paper is concerned with the cultural reconstructions of the industrial Midlands in current programmes of urban regeneration, heritage reconstruction and place promotion, particularly where they involve projects of landscaping and architectural renovation. The paper establishes two points of departure. The first is that manufacturing industry is regarded as an unfashionable identity for a region to possess. Second, it is argued that strategies of place promotion, heritage reconstruction and urban regeneration have a number of audiences whose expectations may be in conflict; thus, accommodating these expectations is problematic. This paper examines the presence of industrial imagery within projects of urban regeneration and explores the strategies employed to accommodate the expectations of its audiences.
