The Best Pattern of Residential Streets
In 1966 Christopher Alexander wrote “The Pattern of Streets.” He used an idealization of existing networks to show that they could be radically improved. This article uses idealized descriptions of existing networks, but it seeks the best pattern of streets in residential areas. This is the pattern that delivers the most desireable combination of environmental quality and service to traffic. The theoretical work provides prototype patterns. To confirm these and develop specific design details a review of practical experience is used with the focus on appeal to users, cost, and ease of implementation. A particular street pattern is recommended in combination with an approach to design for the road space involved.
