Interpolation of Threshold Soil Moisture Levels from Soil Moisture Frequency Distributions
Soil moisture simulations were carried out for long periods of weather records at three sites in South Africa. Yearly soil moisture estimates from specific chosen output dates were sorted into ascending order to give a cumulative frequency distribution for each output date and site. It was found that soil moisture levels at selected frequencies, or risk of recurrence, were significantly correlated with the average and standard deviation of each distribution. These relationships could be generalized over the three sites, but it was necessary to analyze the winter and summer seasons independently. These empirical relationships could be used to extrapolate expected soil moisture thresholds at specific levels of risk over broad areas and many weather stations, using sorted frequency distributions of soil moisture estimates from only a few sites. This has strong implications for preparation of soil moisture reserve maps at various probability or risk levels.
