Carrying Forward Heritage: A Review of Contextualism in New Construction in Beijing
This article reviews how contextualism has been involved in new construction in Beijing on an urban scale since the early fifties, when the most extensive postdynasty construction took place. Although the historical architectural heritage and context of Beijing is complex, this article focuses on the exterior visual characteristics, which are by far not only the most noticeable aspect of the context, but are most often referred to and most controversial as well in practicing contextualism. The contextual design practice is assessed in a historical perspective with regard to its intention to carry forward the city's architectural heritage.
