Acoustical Defects in Buildings—An Educational Responsibility
Acoustical defects in buildings are just as important to recognize, diagnose and remedy as common building defects. Both types of defects occur in buildings for similar reasons and these range from design and constructional errors to the breakdown of building materials or elements.
Existing acoustical Criteria and Standards do help to establish, objectively, acoustical defects in buildings, but first these have to be subjectively recognized. Typical examples are given to illustrate this point.
To avoid acoustical defects occurring in buildings, and to help to recognize these once they have occurred as well as to implement the most appropriate remedial measures, is considered to be principally an educational responsibility, which should be directed to all levels of the community.
