Park am Gleisdreieck, a dialectical narrative
This critique concerns Park am Gleisdreieck in Berlin, designed by Atelier Loidl and realized between 2009 and 2013. The critique positions itself in a frame as developed by art historian Noël Carroll, and explores the tension between a reading of Park am Gleisdreieck as designed by the designer, and the development of the area over a longer period of time as a social production. Here it builds upon the work of sociologist Jens Lachmund. Lachmund reflects on the post-war history of Gleisdreieck, and how it became seen as a ‘nature park’. The Loidl design reacts to the situation as given in 2006. The critique evaluates the achievements of the design, and aims to raise the understanding of different readings of the park by unravelling its history. This is seen as a too often neglected aspect of landscape architecture, which is its connection to time.
