Optimization of cropping patterns in the command area of multiple reservoir system using TLBO algorithm
The multiple reservoir system saves and supplies additional quantity of water to growing crops during subsequent season in the command areas of semiarid regions. However, the optimization of cropping patterns in the command area of a multiple reservoir system is crucial to increase agricultural yield and food security to feed an increasing global population. The objective of this study was to develop teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO) model for effective utilization of surplus water of upstream reservoir in command area of downstream reservoir in a multiple reservoir system to optimize cropping pattern and maximize the net benefits (NBs). Comparing the results TLBO model with those of LP model, concluded that the wheat cultivation has to be increased to enhance net benefits and food security. The enhanced net benefit was approximate 20.24% with the use of the TLBO model. The total crop area is augmented by 12.26%, 44.38%, and 52.73% with the use of the TLBO model in the command area of Aji2, Nyari-2, and Aji-3 reservoir, respectively, after considering utilization of surplus water of Aji-2 reservoir in the command area of Nyari-2 and Aji-3 reservoir.
