Computers in Building: a strategy for building research
An address on this theme was given at the CIB Congress in Stockholm by the director of the US National Bureau of Standards' Center for Building Technology, who is also now President of CIB. The address is presented here in edited form. It shows how advances in technology are revolutionising practices in all phases of design, construction and end-use, with enormous potential benefits. But well-focused building research and development will be needed, notably on the software, if problems are to be avoided. Three main areas of expected application are considered — automated building services, automated construction equipment (and possibly construction processes as well), and integrated project information systems within a general trend towards computer-integrated building practices. The implications are far-reaching, and pose a special challenge to research, in traditional and in new areas, if hopeful expectations are to be realised.
