A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Building science before the 18th century contained not merely rules still used today, but also rules that were in error. A comprehensive and quantitative approach dates only from the beginning of the twentieth century. Formal education in architecture and engineering started a few decades earlier, and it included the study of structure and materials from the beginning. The application of science to environmental design and spatial modelling is of more recent date.
