Statistical Analysis on Microcomputers
This report provides a general framework for evaluating statistical software programs and evaluates eight such programs. It concludes that planners interested in serious statistical analysis will find almost any capability previously available on the mainframe now available on microcomputers. Microcomputers often offer greater capabilities than the mainframe versions in such areas as the use of graphics in exploratory data analysis, interactive data analysis and model building, and integration of analysis directly into reports. In most situations, statistical computing and report preparation is likely to be easier, faster, and less expensive on microcomputers than on larger systems. Each program, however, has its strengths and weaknesses. Planners who do much statistical computing probably will require more than one package to meet diverse or specialized needs.
