An insight on the advancements of biological technologies in the bioremediation of textile effluents
Advances in textile processing technologies and industrial growth has made textile industries as a major source of water pollution. Increasing pollution and shrinking freshwater sources has increased demand for remediation and restoration of polluted water bodies to safeguard the ecosystem. The current review provides the recent advances in various aspects of bioremediation to reinstate the polluted ecosystem by using cost-effective and ecologically sustainable technologies. In recent years bioremediation has become one of the most extensively employed remediation technology. However, the lack of significant knowledge on the physiological changes and the sustainability of microbes and plants in polluted environments limits the application of bioremediation. The review discusses the conventional and advanced biological treatment techniques specifically addressing the biotechnological advances such as the use of bioreactors, microbial-assisted remediation, and metagenomic aspects of bioremediation. The review also highlights the integrated approach of various advanced biotechnological techniques and their application in microbial remediation.
