Historic Preservation Education: Alongside Architecture in Academia
Formal historic preservation education began in the sixties, in three departments of architecture, largely at the initiative of architectural historians. Much has changed since then, however. The growth of the preservation movement has had an enormous impact on preservation education, broadening its range of concerns and giving rise to a distinct set of curriculum standards. The connection—or lack of it—between architectural education and preservation education can be seen in a number of areas, most notably in the design studio. Yet, the importance of an active interaction between architecture and preservation remains paramount, because both professions will continue to focus on the rehabilitation of our built environment. A number of paths might be followed to bring the two disciplines into closer contact.
