Using Expert Systems to Check Compliance with Municipal Building Codes
The regulation and enforcement of building codes is a primary function of local governments. Although the regulations are typically numerous, complex, and highly interactive, the plan checkers who administer them are often relatively inexperienced. A prototype, based on Vancouver's Building Bylaws that govern spatial separation between single family residential dwellings, demonstrates that expert systems can improve the productivity of plan checkers while increasing the accuracy and consistency of bylaw enforcement.
