Shading by Urban Forests in Arid Ecosystems
In arid areas, the forestation of cities constitutes an important bioclimatic potential that acts positively in the improvement of the conditions of the population's physical comfort (temperature and humidity) in open, public and private spaces. This study comparatively investigates two methods to calculate the shading capacity of trees: a solarmetrical and a photometrical method. Both methods were found to be suitable for the selection of deciduous species potentially more capable to be used in urban areas in arid climatic zones. The results can be incorporated into the national norms and policies for urban public forestation applicable in the design of consolidated or new urban areas in arid zones around the world. The results contribute to bioclimatic architecture and the population's physical comfort in arid ecosystems and as a contribution to regional energy saving.
