A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
When planning, we always encounter the problem of defining the identity of the landscape. Arising from physical realities, landscape identities are no less social constructs, forming the basis of our interaction with the landscape. Research conducted in Slovenia has revealed that landscape identity is related to the concept of the nation: national identity is bound to the environment, that is, to specific landscapes and even to an idealized landscape type. Although conservative and related to myth, it is a persistent underlying force guiding our relationship with the environment. The social perception of the national space or territory is shaped by means of communication within the socialization process. Therefore, the social conception of the national space tends inevitably towards uniformity, regardless of its actual geographical diversity. Selected landscapes or places emerge as representative of the whole, usually appearing as symbolic places that epitomize the national space. Such an image of space is unrealistic; it blurs the vision and blinds us to serious problems in the environment.
