Retrofitting Old Steel Riveted Railway Truss Bridges in Bulgaria: A Case Study
This article presents the procedure commonly followed by the authorities in Bulgaria when an old steel railway bridge has to remain in service after the realization of a project for rehabilitation and upgrading of the railway line crossing the bridge. The procedure is illustrated by a case study of a steel railway bridge situated on the Skutare–Manole section of the major Plovdiv–Burgas railway line. A review of the standards and specifications for the new design and retrofitting of steel railway bridges in Bulgaria is presented. A historical review of the vertical and horizontal railway traffic loads is included. Different defects and calculations of the deficient elements according to the Eurocodes and the old standards are summarized. The results are analysed and a possible solution for retrofitting of the bridge is proposed.
